the Castle of Contignaco
Adalberto Pallavicino built the castle around the XI century, and it appears that the excellent preserved tower, which rises to a height of 30 metres, actually dates back to the year 1030. Following violent clashes, the castle was conquered in 1315 by the Aldighieri family of Parma, they took control of some of the local saltworks of the land.
The Aldighieri of Parma (later known as "of Contignaco") held it untill 1537. Afterwards, during the centuries, the castle became a dominion of many other families and during these periods of change it was modified many times.
The castle is surrounded by splendid oak trees, cedars, cypresses and laurels. A remarkable an ancient oak, with a trunk that is over two metres in diameter stands at the entrance to the castle. Nowadays the castle is a farm with vineyards.
